Very near Los Vilos is Quilimarí Valley. It is an area I've known for years and whose aridity attracts me more than any other landscape. I left with some friends and the whole brood for a walk in the area, with many places of great historical value and heritage. So it was that after going through Quilimarí and stock up on fruit and vegetables, reached the village of Guangualí, famous for its ceramic goats. Every time I go buy some to augment my collection. According to Mariana Huerta, one of the potters who led the group of artisans, the activity grew out of a ceramic tile project led by Professor Juan Malpartida in Cultural de Los Vilos Still Life in 2001. The group then continued his training at the School of Applied Arts Crafts del Fuego in Santiago. The famous ceramic goats originated as part of identity area and its surroundings. What these animals more typical towering rocky hills in search of food? Now these potters are a consolidated group that gives free rein to their own creations. New collections have been devoted to cactus, birds and petroglyphs in the Valley.
I was surprised by the sales floor of a house potters announced in a poster "woodwork." This is Luis Marchant, who was inspired by the many species of birds in the area to make mobiles and other decorations. Colorado breast Loicas, chercanes, sparrows and thrushes fly under the grape vines of the family home and welcome visitors attracted by the announcement.
The surprises of the trip did not end there. To follow Tilama way leads to a different attraction: a quartz mine in the landscape. We kept collecting white stones and thinking about the fate of these once back in Santiago.
Despite the win, did not give us time to go to the petroglyphs near Culimo reservoir. These are remnants of ancient settlements, possibly the culturamolle. There will be time to return to this valley and know that rock art.
- Guangualí The pottery is located about 14 kilometers from Quilimarí, a town near the Route 5.
